Learn how to plot a story and build a character arc just from the information in your character profile, before you even start writing the first page of your story.

4 Types of Tension and How to Make Sure They Hit

We’ve all heard the term ‘build tension in your story’, right? It’s a pretty common piece of writing advice, and for good reason. Without tension in your story, your reader isn’t going to care about too much. There are no stakes. But, building tension is more than just putting your character in sticky situations and hoping they make it out alive. Not only are there different types of tension, but there’s some ground work we need to lay that is less talked about.

How to Write Characters in a Short Story

A lot of people treat short stories like mini-novels, but I will argue until the day I die that they are their own genre of writing and we should treat them as such. If you’re writing short stories the same way you approach novels, it’s time to mix things up. That’s why today we’re talking about how to write characters in a short story.

Different Types of Characters in Literature and How to Use Them

Creating characters that follow the three R’s of characterization is the most important skill a writer can master. That’s why it’s important to understand the different types of characters in literature.

      Dig A Little Deeper

You know how it is, you’ve just finished a series on Netflix and you’re not sure what to watch next, so you pick the first thing that looks vaguely interesting and give it a few minutes to catch your attention. This week, for me, it was a situational cop drama that was light on the drama, heavy on the fluff, and didn’t tax my brain too much when trying to work out who done it. The plot was light and slow, it wasn’t going to win any awards, but sometimes easy watching is all you’re looking for.
