In under 15 minutes you can learn how to effectively use a character profile to create the best version of your story.

There are thousands of character profiles floating around the internet.

But how do you know which ones can actually help you write a better story? Some ask too little, and some waste your time with hundreds of questions that won’t matter in the long run.

I created this video training and a character profile template so you can focus in on what actually matters, and learn how to apply the information in the character profile to the story.

Learn how to plot a story and build a character arc just from the information in your character profile, before you even start writing the first page of your story.

Why I teach the foundations
of fiction writing

Hi, I’m Michelle! I’m a short story writer who holds a Bachelor’s degree in creative writing.

I teach the foundations of creative fiction writing to writers just starting out, looking to get published, or somewhere in between. I’m bringing my teaching practice online so I can reach more writers just like you, and we can all grow our craft together.

Plus, you won’t need to sit through four years of school and go into student debt just to be able to write a decent story if you stick around here.

Where I've Been

I’ve been writing fiction since I could hold a pencil. My dream job as a kid was to be an author.

I got my online-writing start by writing One Direction Fanfiction on Instagram and Wattpad back in 2013. This short stint taught me a lot and got me connected with some talented writers who I’ve lost to anonymity and time. But I’ve been searching for that feeling of a writing community ever since.

I got my Bachelor’s degree in English, concentrated in creative fiction and non-fiction from the University of Montana. During school I got the beautiful idea to start blogging about fiction writing and my experience. This was the birth of what my site is today.

After graduation, I interned for Reedsy for the better part of a year learning about what writers are looking for online and how to better serve them.

Now I work at my local library part-time while I build out this business. I teach a local writing group in my community and I’m bringing those practices online to you.

It’s nice to have you 🙂

How to Write Characters in a Short Story

A lot of people treat short stories like mini-novels, but I will argue until the day I die that they are their own genre of writing and we should treat them as such. If you’re writing short stories the same way you approach novels, it’s time to mix things up. That’s why today we’re talking about how to write characters in a short story.

Different Types of Characters in Literature and How to Use Them

Creating characters that follow the three R’s of characterization is the most important skill a writer can master. If your characters aren’t round, relatable, and realistic, your story is likely to fall flat. You can strategically plan out your characters, their traits, and their roles in a story to help create a cohesive cast of characters that your readers will latch on to. That’s why it’s important to understand the different types of characters in literature.

Dig A Little Deeper

You know how it is, you’ve just finished a series on Netflix and you’re not sure what to watch next, so you pick the first thing that looks vaguely interesting and give it a few minutes to catch your attention. This week, for me, it was a situational cop drama that was light on the drama, heavy on the fluff, and didn’t tax my brain too much when trying to work out who done it. The plot was light and slow, it wasn’t going to win any awards, but sometimes easy watching is all you’re looking for.
